Training Tracks

For translation, literacy, linguistics, language learning and Scripture use.
Preparation for short and long-term service with Wycliffe Bible Translators and other international cross-cultural organizations.

Literacy Track

Literacy Interns come alongside an SIL member or a national translator and develop literacy materials, train teachers and encourage reading and writing.
Training duration: one summer.

Scripture Use Track

Scripture Use workers are involved in a hands-on manner in language communities for the purpose of encouraging Scripture use. They work with the local church or community leaders, carry out research to assess Scripture use and listen to the community’s needs and aspirations. They help develop audio/visual or literacy materials to promote Scripture use.
Training duration: 1 summer + fall = 6 months.

Degree Track

CanIL offers the following degrees:
  – BA Linguistics (4 years)
  – MA Linguistics (2-3 years)
  – MA Linguistics and Exegesis (2-3 years).
The summer degree track fulfills the prerequisites for entering a graduate program or provides foundational training and credits for those interested in the BA Linguistics degree.

Language Learner Track

The Language Learners track provides a good foundation for any language and culture work. Learn to hear, speak and transcribe sounds of the world’s languages. Learn how to communicate in any language.
Training duration: one summer.

Language Survey Track

Language Surveyors do the crucial task of determining how languages in an area are related. These surveys are essential to determining the best strategies for literacy and translation programs. Surveyors often travel to remote areas.
Training duration: 1 summer + fall = 6 months.
