A Unique Program

A quality ESL teacher discerns not only what to do but how to accomplish it, while understanding why a particular method will be effective. That is why our program consists of four components: basic education principles; specific TESOL methodology; cross-cultural communication theories; and basic linguistics (the science of languages). A practicum is required near the completion of the program. In addition to that, we highly recommend that students find opportunities to volunteer in ESL classrooms in the community during their program studies. This provides exposure to ESL environments and assists students in applying what they are learning immediately. It also introduces students to the ESL employment markets following completion of the program.

There are many TESOL training programs to choose from that range in length from a few weeks to a few months. At TWU, the TESOL program is taught by qualified ESL experienced professors, who combine theory and practise, and can be accomplished in one year of study (26 semester hours). We have made this possible through a combination of evening and weekend studies and the nine week summer linguistics program. Students may continue working while they pursue their TESOL studies on a part time or casual basis while pacing themselves as appropriate to their situation, taking up to three or four years to complete the program. Those that wish to complete the program in a year may still find time to work on a part-time basis as none of the three semesters exceed 12 semester hours of study.
