Consecutive Summer Tracks
or 10-month Track for the Linguist-Translator
(training duration: 3 summers or 10 months)

Individuals planning to do linguistic fieldwork and/or translation with SIL International can complete basic pre-field training in three consecutive summers or three consecutive terms (10 months) at CanIL. Some field assignments allow you to take only one or two summers of classes before a two-year field term, after which you would return to finish your training. In any of these cases, it is also expected that learning will be lifelong, and that after a term of service with SIL International, students will return to CanIL or to another SIL training program to continue their education. Six to 10 months training fulfills initial training requirements for a number of roles in SIL including the following:

Partial list of current open language and literacy intern positions in Wycliffe or SIL International.
Partial list of current open linguistic worker positions in Wycliffe or SIL International.

The tracks below represent "classic" SIL academic training for linguist-translators. Both of these tracks build on the same intial course set (Core Pack). Click on each course title for a fuller description.

Linguist-Translator Training Tracks
Most recommended track (best course sequencing):  10 months + (optional field work) + Complete BA Ling, MA Ling or MLE
Summer (Core Pack) Fall Term Spring Term
Optional field work
(1-3 years)
Optionally complete MA Ling or MLE
(an additional 2-3 terms)
Consecutive summer track (similar to 10 month track above. This course load is very demanding due to fewer weeks in the summer term and requires no extra-curricular commitments)
First Summer (Core Pack) Second Summer Third Summer

Optional field work
(1-3 years)
Optionally complete degree
(an additional 2-3 terms)
Alternative consecutive summer track (with Language and Culture Learning** in first summer and Phonological Analysis in 2nd summer)
Note that some students opt for a lighter 3 course load in the second and third summer, leaving additional courses to finish in a degree program.
First Summer Second Summer Third Summer
Optional field work
(1-3 years)
Optionally complete degree
(an additional 2-3 terms)

* Language Program Design and Management can also be taken as a Distance Education course in any term.
** Note that "LING 365 - Language and Culture Learning" does NOT meet the MLE requirement for "LING 570 Language and Culture Acquisition". If you are planning on doing an MLE enroll in LING 570 in the Fall or Spring term.
