The following are required courses for the Applied Linguistics Major: LING 210, 268, 310, 330, 360, 460, 470, 480, 481 and PHIL 460, and at least 11 hours of other LING courses.

Since most of the linguistics courses are upper level, and are taught in "recommended packages" of courses, it is recommended that students focus primarily on the core requirements for the first two years. The linguistics requirements will be the primary focus of the final two years. The Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) summer courses are a part of the requirements, and are prerequisite to most of the advanced linguistics courses taught in fall and spring. Therefore it is recommended that the 9 week summer session be taken after year two of the program. It is also possible to take it after year three.
