CanIL operates a generous financial aid program to help students avoid, reduce or eliminate debt. The PreLaunch program gives more options for financial aid. Click below for more information.

CanIL PreLaunch Overview  

 

CanIL financial aid is available for all degree programs, training tracks, and individual linguistics courses.

Fill in the financial aid form by these deadlines:

  • Summer Semester – apply by April 15
  • Fall Semester – apply by July 15
  • TWU Spring Semester – apply by November 15
  • Tyndale Winter Semester – apply by November 15

CanIL Bursary

This bursary provides financial support to students towards the costs of tuition and living expenses. Preference is given to students indicating a desire to work in Bible translation, literacy or related roles.

Church Matching Grant

Only students who enroll in PreLaunch (link) and are in the BA LING, MA LING, MALT degree, or a Training Track program may be eligible to receive additional financial aid through the church matching grant program.

Eligibility

Students enrolled in PreLaunch (link) and:

BA LING majors in the final year of their program, MA LING, and MALT degree students enrolled full-time each semester (min. 9 semester hours) for a full academic year will qualify. Training Track students must be enrolled full-time through to the completion of their program.
Graduate students are eligible to apply in their first full-time (min. 9 semester hours) semester in a graduate program.

Students who are already members of a Bible translation organization with a previous field assignment are NOT eligible for the Church Matching Grant. The purpose of the Church Matching Grant is to encourage students to commence engaging with their churches as they prepare for a field assignment.

Amount per Award

1. For Masters students, up to $4,000 for the first academic year on a 1:1 matching basis (a maximum of $2,000 from sponsoring churches) and up to $8,000 for the second academic year on a 3:1 matching basis (maximum of $2,000 from sponsoring churches).

2. For BA students, up to $6,000 in the fourth year on a 2:1 matching basis (a maximum of $2,000 from sponsoring churches)

3. For Training Track students, up to a $2,000 one-time award on a 1:1 matching basis (a maximum of $1,000 from sponsoring churches).

To Apply

Church Matching Grant forms and brochures for your church are sent to students enrolled in PreLaunch.

  • For degree program students, the church portion of the CMG funds must be received no later than the add/drop deadline of the spring semester for that academic year.
  • For Training Track students, the church portion of the CMG funds must be received no later than the add/drop deadline of their last semester of study. Late applications will not be accepted.

Graduate Entrance Award

This award is available to graduate students in the MA LING or the MALT programs. Students accepted into these programs are eligible to receive these awards.

Amount per Award

Up to $3000.

Ministry Boost Award

Students who participate in the CanIL PreLaunch program and expect to graduate from CanIL with a BA LING, MA LING, MALT degree, or a Training Track, and who plan to join a Bible Translation organization, such as Wycliffe Bible Translators or Pioneer Bible Translators, may apply. This award will be given near the beginning of the student’s second year provided there is evidence of adequate participation in PreLaunch.

Eligibility

Students who participate in the CanIL PreLaunch program and expect to graduate from CanIL with a BA LING, MA LING, MALT degree, or a Training Track and who plan to join a Bible Translation organization, such as Wycliffe Bible Translators or Pioneer Bible Translators are eligible.

Amount per Award

$3,000 minimum for BA LING, MA LING or MALT degrees paid at the beginning of the second year. $1,000 per semester of a Training Track. (e.g. a two-semester track will be eligible for a $2,000 award (for a maximum of three semesters)).

Ministry Launch Award

Students who are graduating from CanIL with a BA LING, MA LING, MALT degree, or a Training Track and who plan to join a Bible Translation organization, such as Wycliffe Bible Translators or Pioneer Bible Translators, and who have not received the Ministry Boost Award, may apply. The award is not given out until the student takes up a full-time assignment with the organization.

Eligibility

Students who are graduating from CanIL with a BA LING, MA LING, MLE degree, or a Training Track and who plan to join a Bible Translation organization, such as Wycliffe Bible Translators or Pioneer Bible Translators, and who have not received the Ministry Boost Award, may apply.

Amount per Award

$3,000 minimum for BA LING, MA LING or MLE degrees. $1,000 per semester of a Training Track. (e.g. a two-semester track will be eligible for a $2,000 award (for a maximum of three semesters)).

Language and Culture Discovery Award

Interested in language and culture? Explore the possibilities! Linguistics courses fulfill elective credit requirements for a number of TWU degree programs. As the Linguistics Department at TWU, CanIL (Canada Institute of Linguistics) provides cross-cultural and linguistics classes. This understanding of language and culture will broaden your worldview and better equip you for various contexts in an increasingly global community. Check with your advisor and program worksheet to see if this is an option that you can pursue.

Eligibility

  • Undeclared or non-linguistics majors at TWU or Tyndale University College.
  • Note that TWU Torch Award recipients or Tyndale tuition benefit recipients are not eligible. 
  • Note that Linguistics majors or minors can apply for regular CanIL financial aid (as opposed to this Discover Language and Culture Award).

TWU Eligible Courses:

  • LING 101: Intro to Linguistics (offered fall and spring)
  • LING 210: Language and Society (offered fall, spring and summer)
  • LING 310: Articulatory Phonetics (2nd or 3rd year standing, offered fall, spring and summer)

Tyndale Eligible Courses:

Amount per Award

$500 per eligible linguistics course.

We encourage our CanIL students to pursue the scholarships and bursaries available to them through our partnership schools.

  • BA Ling and MA Ling students should contact TWU for financial aid options.
  • MALT students should contact ACTS for financial aid options.
  • BA Ling students at Tyndale should contact them for financial aid options.
  • We also encourage students to look into other potential scholarship resources.

Recipients of the TWU Torch Award or Tyndale Employee Tuition Benefit are not eligible for CanIL Financial Aid.
