This application is for the Summer@CanIL program, hosted by Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) at Trinity Western University in Langley, BC. CanIL is a partner organization with Trinity Western University, ACTS Seminaries, and Tyndale University. If you are interested in a degree program as well as summer courses, you’ll also need to complete an application from one of these educational institutions. Please see www.canil.ca/apply for more information.


Final application deadline for Summer 2025 is April 30, 2025. Due to a high number of applications, we encourage you to get your application and supporting documents in as soon as possible, particularly if you are an international applicant.
Summer Program Delivery
After running the Summer@CanIL program online in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope to host the Summer program in person again for 2022! At CanIL, we value a holistic approach to education: face-to-face learning in an engaging classroom environment combined with time spent living and growing in community. Our Summer Program in particular has always included many opportunities to interact inside and outside the classroom in a close-knit community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and linguists active in their field. It’s a great opportunity to study together, worship in chapels, have lots of fun, and ask questions about living and serving in different locations around the world. Join us for a summer of linguistics and community!

Program Dates
The term "Summer@CanIL 2025" includes both an online InterSession Course (April 28 - June 27) and the regular Summer Program (June 9 - August 8, 2025).

The InterSession Course is LING 210 OL: Language and Society, an asynchronous (self-paced with deadlines) online course from April 28 to June 27. (Please note: LING 210 will also be offered during the regular Summer program.) Students who wish to take LING 210 OL (InterSession), as well as regular Summer courses are strongly encouraged to finish the InterSession course by June 9, 2025.

Regular Summer@CanIL 2024 classes will run from June 9 - August 8, 2025. Dorm move-in day is June 7, and a mandatory Summer orientation takes place on June 8. The "Summer Finale" events take place on the afternoon of August 8. Dorm residents must check out by noon on August 9.

Program of Interest

(Please note: Your choice can be changed later in the application process. This is just to get a preliminary idea of your goals).
*Actually serving overseas in a specialist role (or field linguist role) with SIL and/or a Bible translation organization often requires a graduate degree. An initial field assignment can often be done with 3-4 semesters of training, but with the understanding that additional formal training will be completed.

Note: This application (the one you are filling out right now) is for students who are interested in pursuing casual studies, a non-degree training track or prerequisites for a master's degree.

For our degree programs, CanIL partners with Trinity Western University (TWU), ACTS Seminaries (ACTS), and Tyndale University (TU). You  may need to complete two applications - this one (for CanIL), and one for the formal degree.

Transfer Credit

If you plan to transfer course credit, please be sure that you have spoken with your academic advisor at your current academic institution to be sure that CanIL's courses (accredited through Trinity Western University) will be accepted as transfer credit toward your program.
English Proficiency
All of CanIL's courses are taught in English, using English textbooks and study materials.
In order for English to be considered your first language, it must be (one of) the primary language(s) that you were exposed to from birth. 
Demonstrating English Proficiency

International students whose first language is not English must submit a score from an English proficiency test. We accept scores from TOEFL iBT, Academic IELTS, or the Duolingo English Test. Scores must be current (not older than two years).

  • For undergraduate studies, the minimum scores are as follows:
    • TOEFL iBT: 88 (minimum of 21 in each area, and 5 for Test of Written English)
    • Academic IELTS: 6.5 across all bands (6.0 on Writing band)
    • Duolingo English Test*: 110 (minimum 95 on Literacy)
  • For graduate studies, the minimum scores are follows:
    • TOEFL iBT: 100 (with 27 in Writing)
    • Academic IELTS: 7.0 across all bands
    • Duolingo English Test*: 125
*Duolingo English Test is not accepted if you are applying for a certificate or degree program. 

Applicants who have completed a degree program at an English-speaking university or college in North America may request an exception to this requirement.

NOTE: Canadian applicants from Quebec who speak French as their first language may not need to submit proof of English proficiency. 


Applicants from Quebec
As an applicant from Quebec, you may be exempt from the English proficiency requirement! The Admissions department will follow up with you to discuss this further.

SPECIAL NOTE for Summer 2022
This page of the application deals with housing needs for the summer session. As noted at the beginning of this application, we are currently planning to run the Summer 2022 program in-person, but we do not yet know what this will look like, or if on-campus housing will be available. Please use this section as an opportunity to declare whether or not you would like on-campus housing if it is available. If you are accepted, you will receive more information about housing in Spring 2022.

We highly recommend staying in the on-campus housing, if it is available! It is an excellent way to build community and lasting friendships.
